48-Hour Patch Tests & HRIPT Tests

The Modernization of Cosmetic Regulations Act of 2022 requires that all companies manufacturing and marketing cosmetic products in the US must maintain records substantiating that their cosmetic products are safe for human use. Patch Testing is a component of safety substantiation.

The 48 Hour Patch Test assesses the irritation potential of a topically-applied cosmetic product. A consumer panel consisting of 25 study participants are evaluated for signs of irritation after application of an occlusive or semi-occlusive patch coated with the product.

Human Repeat Insult Patch Testing (HRIPT) is generally conducted on a test panel of 50 study participants under the supervision of a dermatologist. Some retailers such as Amazon require HRIPT to list products on their website.
